Project Description

CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) applications are playing a major role in distance education, e.g. for group discussions, jointly working on electronic courses, jointly visiting Web pages, remote laboratories, video conferencing, joint program development, co-operative publishing etc.
Two different kinds of CSCW systems exist:
  • with asynchronous systems participants can collaborate independently, i.e. it is not necessary to meet at a specific time. Thus group members are only slightly coupled. Examples are bulletin boards and mail systems.
  • with synchronous systems participants join a session at a specific time, collaboration is more intensive. Examples are shared whiteboard systems and conference tools.
DreamTeam is an environment for developing, synchronous shared applications. The DreamTeam environment allows the developer co-operative applications like single user applications, without struggling with network details, synchronisations algorithms etc. The environment consists of three components:
  • a development environment,
  • a runtime environment,
  • a simulation environment.
DreamTeam is entirely written in Java, thus runnable on many systems.
A screenshot tour gives an impression of the DreamTeam front end and a few shared applications.
A DreamTeam add-on, called DreamObjects, simplifies the management of shared data. It extends the DreamTeam runtime and development environment and offers a variety of shared data services.
